DHS claims House Democrats are interacting with criminals who are in the country illegally

Homeland Security Criticizes House Democrats’ Visit to ICE Detainees

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has publicly criticized several House Democrats for their recent visit to ICE detention facilities, labeling the act as an indication of their preference for “criminal illegal aliens” over American citizens.

On Monday, Representatives Juan Vargas, Mike Levin, Sarah Jacobs, and Scott Peters visited ICE’s office in San Diego to meet with a Honduran individual facing charges related to spousal kidnapping and abuse. DHS pointed out the inconsistency, saying, “Democrats have once again chosen to support illegal aliens who are criminals and not American citizens,” according to Assistant Secretary of State Tricia McLaughlin.

McLaughlin characterized the visiting lawmakers as “sanctuary politicians,” claiming they undermine the efforts of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deport criminals. She expressed her discontent regarding how these officials continue to question law enforcement practices.

McLaughlin emphasized that the individual, Dennis Mauricio Rojas-Molina, has a troubling history, having been deported a decade ago after being arrested on serious charges, including domestic violence. He unlawfully re-entered the U.S. after his deportation.

Further, Rep. Mike Levin shared on social media that detainees often have families and supportive roles in their communities. “People like him need a way to stay,” Levin stated, advocating for legal pathways for those who work hard and contribute positively, suggesting they deserve better treatment.

DHS countered the Democrats’ claims, stating that ICE remains committed to arresting high-risk individuals. At least 70% of those detained have prior criminal convictions or ongoing charges in the U.S. They asserted that ICE is focused on dangerous offenders, which includes serious crimes that affect public safety.

Ultimately, DHS aims to clarify the misconceptions surrounding its actions and reinforce the notion that its operations target significant threats to community safety, rather than innocent individuals. This ongoing debate highlights the complex and often contentious nature of immigration policy in America.
