Cleveland Browns rookie Shedua Sanders shared his thoughts following his first NFL start, which resulted in a victory against the Las Vegas Raiders. He had spent the offseason declaring that if he got a full season with the starting lineup, the Browns could become a “dangerous” team. In light of his performance—where he completed 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown—he faced some backlash on social media, being labeled as arrogant for his comments.
Former NFL player Sean Merriman expressed his concern over Sanders’ remarks, acknowledging why some perceive him as overconfident. Yet, he argued that a quarterback needs to have a certain level of confidence. Merriman noted that Sanders’ cockiness could actually boost the Browns’ belief in their ability to win, something they’ve struggled with. He emphasized that when a team is playing at a high level, that sense of confidence is crucial. Merriman also mentioned the infectious nature of a quarterback’s confidence, saying it can energize the entire team. “With Shedeur as the starter, they enter games feeling more assured, which is a change,” he said.
Looking ahead, Sanders is set to play in the upcoming Week 13 game against the San Francisco 49ers. Merriman mentioned that if Sanders continues to win, it could solidify his position as the starting quarterback. He pointed out that Sanders must focus on what’s happening within the team and not let outside pressures affect him. “He just needs to stick with it and keep his head down,” Merriman concluded.
