Mexico's Government Says Farmer and Trucker Protests Are Politically Motivated, Blockades Will Persist

Farmers and Truck Drivers in Mexico Continue Highway Blockades

Farmers and truck drivers across Mexico are expected to maintain their blockades of major highways, as they demand action against cartel violence and extortion. These protests, which have spread across more than 20 states, are effectively halting commerce, and the demonstrators feel that their concerns have been largely ignored.

In reaction, members of Mexico’s ruling MORENA party have alleged that the protests are politically motivated, suggesting that they aim to undermine the party’s reputation. The Interior Secretary, Rosa Isela Rodríguez, has also claimed that many protest organizers are individuals who have previously been investigated by federal authorities.

This week, protesters plan to engage with officials from Rodríguez’s office to discuss ways to resolve the blockades.

The unrest began earlier this week as farmers and truck drivers voiced their frustrations over the government’s inaction regarding cartel-related violence. Truck drivers report that they face constant threats of robbery and carjackings, while farmers are pressured by organized crime to pay high fees for protection in order to operate. These protests come amid increasing awareness of violence and lawlessness in the country, driven largely by deep-seated corruption within the government and President Claudia Sheinbaum’s reluctance to take a firm stance against drug cartels.

Contrary to the calls for action, President Sheinbaum has previously dismissed suggestions to renew the country’s drug war, arguing that such measures violate the rights of cartel members by denying them fair trials.
