New Character “Dipshit” Derek Turnbow in Season 5 of Stranger Things
In a surprising twist, Netflix’s Stranger Things has introduced a new character, “Dipshit” Derek Turnbow (played by Jake Connelly), who unexpectedly reveals the fun side of his personality when influenced by the right crowd.
**Spoilers for Stranger Things Season 5 Part 1 ahead**
Throughout the initial episodes of Season 5, Derek transforms from a playground bully tormenting Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) into a potential target of Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), and ultimately, into a surprisingly amusing ally for the main group.
So, who exactly is Derek Turnbow? And how did this shift happen? Also, will he follow the path of other breakout characters who met tragic ends?
Over the years, Stranger Things has introduced memorable supporting characters like Barb Holland (Shannon Purser) and Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn), who quickly endeared themselves to fans but often faced grim fates.
Derek Turnbow, a newcomer in the show’s fifth and concluding season, is actually part of the wealthy Turnbow family renowned in Hawkins. His sister Tina has been mentioned since season three.
We first see Derek in action when he bullies Holly at recess, making her dizzy on the playground’s merry-go-round. Later, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) observes through Vecna’s eyes and discovers that Derek is on Vecna’s radar. This leads the group to devise a wild plan to save him, ultimately resulting in Derek taking on the persona of “Fun Derek” in an effort to help the team.
Will Derek, the bully turned hero, meet a heroic end or face Vecna’s wrath? Or could he somehow dodge the fate of many characters before him? The story remains tantalizingly unclear.
Meet Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow
Thirteen-year-old Jake Connelly portrays Derek Turnbow in Stranger Things Season 5. Interestingly, this marks something of a debut for him, with his sole prior credit being a short film titled Between the Silence.
Is Derek Turnbow’s Fate Sealed?
As soon as Derek’s character poster made its rounds online, fans began speculating about the possibility of him being the character who sacrifices themselves this season. It’s a common trend for new characters in Stranger Things to meet unfortunate ends unless they have connections to the main cast.
Although we don’t yet know what lies ahead for “Fun” Derek Turnbow, we do know he barely escapes the troubles of Season 5 Part 1.
**More spoilers for Stranger Things Season 5 Part 1**
He finds himself rescued repeatedly by brave heroes like Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), and Will. In Episode 4, titled “The Sorcerer,” Joyce protects him from a Demogorgon, while Mike steps in to shield him physically. Will even taps into his long-dormant psychic connection to help save the day.
Yet, four episodes still remain in this final season of Stranger Things, and Derek’s ultimate fate remains uncertain.
Stranger Things Season 5 Part 2 is set to release on December 25th at 8pm ET.
