After an intense Game 7 in the World Series where they fell short, the Toronto Blue Jays quickly made a splash in the free-agent market.
Pitcher Dylan Schiess has reportedly agreed to a seven-year deal worth $210 million. He’s shown to be a dependable player, starting at least 32 games in each of the last five MLB seasons, which is quite impressive.
Last season with the San Diego Padres, Schiess had a 4.55 ERA, striking out 215 batters while issuing 71 walks over 168 innings.
Schiess began his career with the Chicago White Sox, where he racked up a record of 14-8 and a remarkable 2.20 ERA during the 2022 season—even leading the majors in walks that year. He even finished as a runner-up for the AL Cy Young Award.
Then, after another season in Chicago, he was traded to San Diego in March 2024, where he ended the season with a 14-11 record and a 3.47 ERA, earning himself a fourth-place finish in the National League Cy Young Award voting.
Clearly, Schiess has been a standout this offseason, joining a Blue Jays team that just clinched the America East division title.
Toronto’s pitching lineup is already looking solid with names like Kevin Guzman, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, and Jose Berrios. It’s worth noting, also, that Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer—who started that pivotal Game 7—are now free agents, so the Blue Jays might still be exploring additional options.
