Is a Vikings and Daniel Jones Reunion Possible?
There’s some buzz about a potential reunion between the Vikings and quarterback Daniel Jones, especially considering the recent struggles of Minnesota’s starter, JJ McCarthy.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler brought up an intriguing idea on Wednesday. He suggested that the Vikings might look to follow a strategy similar to the Colts by bringing in a veteran quarterback to challenge McCarthy. The situation could mirror last season’s dynamics between Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis. It’s worth noting, Jones could really complement the Vikings’ roster after backing up Sam Darnold last year.
It’s been quite a year for Jones. After being let go by the Giants following a somewhat rocky tenure, he signed with the Vikings late last season. Then, he transitioned to the Colts, where he put pen to paper on a one-year, $14 million deal.
Fowler mentioned that Jones has already led the Colts to an impressive 8-3 record, and this strong performance could pave the way for a lucrative deal next offseason, whether in Indianapolis or elsewhere.
The Vikings have shown interest in Jones, and their circumstances this offseason look quite different compared to last year. If they sign him, Jones would have some options to weigh.
Last season, both Jones and Sam Darnold were with the Vikings, with Darnold finishing 14-3 before agreeing to a hefty three-year, $100 million contract with the Seahawks in free agency. Darnold, who was picked 10th overall by the Vikings the previous year, stepped in for McCarthy as he sat out his rookie season due to injury.
This season, the Vikings decided to move forward with the 22-year-old McCarthy as their starter, but it’s been a mixed bag so far. He has shown some promising moments, like in a comeback win against the Bears and a nail-biter against the Lions. Still, the Vikings recently endured three consecutive losses with McCarthy throwing only two touchdowns against six interceptions in that stretch.
Currently, McCarthy is dealing with a concussion and is expected to miss an upcoming game against the Seahawks, which opens the door for rookie Max Brosmer to make his first start.
The game kicks off on Sunday at 4:05 p.m., featuring the 4-7 Vikings going up against the 8-3 Seahawks.
