Young Person's Courage Helps Others in Unexpected Flooding

On a challenging Sunday, a young man’s quick thinking became a critical lifeline for people in distress as floodwaters surged. In Boca Raton, Florida, torrents of rain transformed familiar areas into quagmires. Thomas Ruzzano, 18, had just exited a movie with his girlfriend when they were caught off guard by a storm.

“We definitely heard thunder during the film, and it just poured after that,” Thomas mentioned. “Then we realized we were in the middle of a flood on our way back.”

Teenager comes to the rescue

The unexpected storm dumped over 8 inches of rain in a brief period. Their vehicle became immobilized, and the situation worsened quickly. Many bystanders were uncertain about what to do next. But Thomas sprang into action.

“I went from car to car,” he stated, “making sure everyone was okay.”

Wading through water that first reached his knees and then his waist, he knocked on foggy windows, helping frightened people escape before the water escalated. Ultimately, he assisted six or seven individuals to safety, but he heard someone shout about an elderly man still inside a vehicle.

Rescuing a trapped man

The water had risen to the man’s shoulders, and he was stuck because his seatbelt wouldn’t budge. Thomas and some other onlookers rushed over, forcing the door open and freeing him from the restraints.

“He was really trapped, so we had to get him out,” Thomas reported. “He seemed a bit lost in all that chaos, and we just had to help him get to safety.”

They guided the elderly man through the murky water to a nearby restaurant. He was visibly shaken but thankfully alive.

Community support

As Thomas continued the rescue, others began to lend a hand. Acts of kindness flourished in the flooding lot as strangers offered towels, clasped trembling hands, and checked up on people they’d never met before. It was a display of compassion that transcended the flood itself.

“They were incredibly thankful,” he noted. “People kept saying how fortunate they felt to have me around.”

Later, when conditions improved and the water finally receded, Thomas’ parents shared a video capturing their son’s interview, simply captioned, “Mom and Dad are so proud of you.”

A story of hope

What’s perhaps remarkable about this incident is not just one young man’s bravery but how that brave act sparked goodwill among others. In an often-divided world, there’s a sense that compassion can still shine through chaos, guiding people toward safety.

Because, like a rapid flood, love can spread quickly. Yet in its wake, it brings life—rather than loss.

“I will be with you when you cross the sea.”
