Marshall Faulk’s Coaching Journey
Marshall Faulk has reportedly added a new chapter to his career. After being inducted into the Hall of Fame and taking a nearly two-decade break from professional football, he joined Deion Sanders’ coaching staff at the University of Colorado as a running backs coach. However, after just one season, Faulk seems to be making a shift, eyeing a position at Southern University, a historically Black college in his home state of Louisiana. This news was first reported by WAFB.
In an earlier conversation with ESPN, Faulk mentioned he might not have pursued coaching at all if it weren’t for Sanders. He reflected, “This was never on my to-do list. I spent so many hours honing my skills while I played, much like the players and coaches. When I stepped away, it struck me how invested I had been in the game.”
If this potential move becomes official, Faulk would join a growing trend of former NFL players stepping into head coaching roles at HBCUs. Notable names like Michael Vick, who is now the head coach at Norfolk State, and DeSean Jackson, who began coaching at Delaware State this season, have made similar transitions in their careers, despite lacking previous coaching experience.
During his playing days, Faulk was something special. He was named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year multiple times from 1999 to 2001 while playing as part of the Rams’ famed “Greatest Show on Turf.” He also took home the MVP award in 2000 and clinched a Super Bowl title in 2000, in addition to being selected for the Pro Bowl seven times.
The Colorado Buffaloes experienced some ups and downs lately, particularly after the departures of Sanders’ son, Shedeur, and star player Travis Hunter. Sanders ended his first season with a 4-8 record, improved to 9-4 the following year, but now finds himself back at 3-8 as of 2023.
