Over the last decade, President Donald Trump has created some of the most unforgettable moments in American politics. Some were quite divisive, some are historical, and honestly, many were downright funny.
Here are five of those moments that, I think, make me appreciate his time in office.
5. “Turn off the power.”
During his first campaign, Trump quickly gained a reputation for being outspoken and unapologetic. I remember a rally in Atlanta where he turned a technical glitch into a hilarious moment. While he was speaking, the stage lights went out. With perfect comic timing, he remarked, “The venue doesn’t pay the electricity bill,” prompting a wave of laughter and applause from the crowd. Then, when the lights came back on, his reaction was priceless: “No! Turn off the lights!” He kept insisting, “Turn it off! It’s too bright!” and got everyone to join in. It was a classic moment of Trump being Trump.
4. “From a water perspective.”
In September 2018, during Hurricane Florence, Trump shared a video expressing gratitude towards first responders. While it was a routine gesture, he still managed to slip in one of his most memorable lines. He stated, “From a water perspective, one of the wettest conditions I’ve ever seen.” It’s one of those statements that just sticks with you—part funny, part head-scratching.
3. “Trick or Treat”
Halloween 2018 brought out some of Trump’s unscripted charm. At the White House trick-or-treating event, he and Melania handed out candy to kids. One little boy dressed as a Minion struggled to collect candy efficiently due to his costume. Rather than go the traditional route, Trump placed a candy bar on the kid’s head instead, sparking laughter among the onlookers. A classic light-hearted moment.
2. “The N-word”
Trump’s off-the-cuff remarks often drew controversy, but they could also be quite amusing. During a speech to military leaders at Quantico earlier this year, he went off script and delivered an unexpected line about “the N-word.” He stated, “The person who said the word ‘nuclear’ was a really stupid person.” With his characteristic flair, he added, “I call it the N-word. There are two N-words, and you can’t use either of them.” It was one of those classic moments that left people laughing and shaking their heads at the same time.
