Maxi Morales: The Heart of New York City FC
Everyone recognizes Matt Freese’s skills as a goalkeeper, and we can’t ignore Alonso Martinez’s knack for scoring. Yet, when we discuss the leadership of New York City FC, it’s hard to overstate how crucial 38-year-old Maxi Morales is to the team.
The Argentine veteran played a significant role in pushing NYCFC to the Eastern Conference finals with his goal against Philadelphia. However, talking to the players on the squad reveals that his significance extends far beyond just his performance in critical moments.
Tyvon Gray, a defender for NYCFC, shared with the Post, “Honestly, a player like Maxi makes everything easier. He’s fantastic at leading. His experience really speaks volumes. He’s been through a lot, especially alongside me—it’s impressive. For some reason, he excels in the playoffs. I mean, it’s incredible to witness. But I genuinely appreciate it. Top players shine when it matters most.”
Even before he found the net against the Union, Morales had already carved out an important legacy in the club’s history. He was pivotal in securing the franchise’s first MLS Cup in 2021 and has netted 29 goals for NYCFC since joining in 2017, including six playoff goals.
In a club with an average player age of just 24.5 years, Morales stands out as an indispensable leader.
Head coach Pascal Jansen noted, “There’s always a lot going on from day one and throughout the week, and Maxi is the one guiding us. He effectively communicates on the pitch. We’ve had our discussions off the field too, but he’s undeniably one of the key figures.”
He added, “Right now, he’s in an essential position—both on and off the field. Though we should remember the other players too; many share responsibilities, and Maxi is one of them.”
Morales expressed how seriously he takes this leadership role and felt “overflowing with gratitude” for the praise from his teammates.
“It’s tough to make a real impact in this environment,” Morales told the Post. “Thanks to my age and experience, I can support the younger players now. It feels rewarding when people recognize that. In the end, it’s all about legacy—being remembered positively.”
At 38, Morales is closer to retirement than the start of his career. Speculations about this being his final season have been prevalent throughout 2025.
He hasn’t specified a retirement date but mentioned he’s “physically well at the moment.”
“We’ll see what happens after the last game, but I hope to keep playing and growing until it’s truly time to go,” he said.
In their upcoming match, New York City FC will face Inter Miami for a chance to reach their second MLS Cup final in just four years. They’ll be up against a team led by Lionel Messi, another prominent Argentine in MLS.
Morales emphasized the significance of the next game, stating, “It’s everything for this club. The trophy is at stake. We’re going against one of the best teams that fields the greatest players ever—it’s going to be a tough match. Honestly, facing such a team is exhilarating. We need to relish it, but responsibly—just because we’re here doesn’t guarantee reaching the final. So, when you find yourself in this position, make sure to enjoy it while trying to secure a win.”
