Big 12 tiebreakers: Scenarios for securing a spot in the Championship Game in Week 14

Upcoming Big 12 Championship Scenarios

The final weekend of the 2025 college football season is just around the corner, which means we’re gearing up for the Big 12 Championship Game in Arlington next Saturday.

Texas Tech and BYU have led for much of the regular season, setting the stage for a potential rematch from their earlier meeting in the league title game. However, don’t count out Utah and Arizona State—one small twist could change everything.

Week 14 Matchups: @ West Virginia, Saturday, 12:00 PM ET

  • Win
  • Or Arizona State loss

Texas Tech invested heavily in the transfer portal this offseason, and it appears to be paying off well. They’ve been a strong presence in the Big 12 this year and are aiming for their first 11-win season since 2008. Their only loss came against Arizona State earlier in the season, but they’ve since bounced back with four consecutive wins and currently sit fifth in the College Football Playoff rankings.

To secure their spot in the Big 12 title game, the Red Raiders need just one victory this weekend. A loss, however, could still keep them in the hunt depending on other results. It won’t be easy, though. West Virginia has shown some life lately, and Rich Rodriguez seems to be making strides in his first year back in Morgantown.

Week 14 Matchups: vs. UCF, Saturday, 1 PM ET

  • Win
  • Or Arizona State loss
  • Or Texas Tech loss + Arizona State win

Similarly, BYU finds itself in a pretty solid position this weekend, needing to win while keeping an eye on a few scenarios. The Cougars have also had a steady ascent through the Big 12 ranks this season, with their only defeat being a 29-7 loss to Texas Tech earlier. They’re set to face a UCF team that has struggled this year, and the early kickoff may work to BYU’s advantage.

Week 14 Matchups: @ Kansas State, Friday, 12:00 PM ET

  • Win + Arizona State win + BYU win + Texas Tech loss

Utah, after having lost to both Texas Tech and BYU earlier, has managed to win four straight in the latter part of the season to reclaim their opportunity. They’ll need to win against Kansas and have a few other teams lose, including a dreaded scenario requiring support from their rival, BYU, to further their chances.

Week 14 Matchups: vs. Arizona, Friday, 9 PM ET

  • Win + Arizona State loss + Texas Tech loss
  • Or Win + Texas Tech win + BYU loss
  • Or Win + Utah win + Texas Tech loss + BYU loss

Meanwhile, Arizona State, the defending Big 12 champions, still hold a chance to make it back to Arlington next week. They are the only team to have knocked off Texas Tech so far this season, and their current quarterback, Jeff Sims, has stepped in admirably for the injured Sam Leavitt.

First on ASU’s agenda is a victory in the Territorial Cup against Arizona. They’ve had strong success in this rivalry, winning six of the last eight matchups. By the time Saturday rolls around, the outcome of Utah’s game against Kansas will be crucial in determining whether they’ll proceed to next week’s championship game.
