Dallas Cowboys’ Confusing Celebration Traditions

The traditions surrounding the Dallas Cowboys often spark confusion each year.

In a memorable game, the Cowboys narrowly defeated the Kansas City Chiefs with a score of 31-28. Tight end Jake Ferguson’s touchy celebration, which stirred some controversy, evaded any fines, although a technical glitch may have played a role in that outcome.

During the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, the Cowboys continued their collaboration with the Salvation Army. This partnership was highlighted by singer Post Malone, who helped place a large red kettle prominently behind the end zone, right in front of eager fans.

In the third quarter, Ferguson celebrated an incredible touchdown by seemingly tapping his toe into the end zone before running towards one of the kettles at AT&T Stadium. Surprisingly, no penalties were enforced for this animated celebration, and the NFL didn’t impose any fines.

However, things took a puzzling turn.

After a thorough review, Ferguson’s touchdown was annulled and removed from the scoreboard. This inconsistency adds yet another layer to an already intricate situation, especially since the league has previously overlooked or even penalized kettle celebrations.

In 2024, another kettle-related incident stirred up debate. Cincinnati Bengals running back Chase Brown boldly claimed that the league was pushing players towards potential fines for such celebrations. He couldn’t resist the temptation, as four tea kettles were set up on the field during a game against the Cowboys, leading him to jump into one. As a result, he faced a fine of $5,481 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

This ongoing scrutiny regarding celebrations traces back to former Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, and it seems to be as inconsistent as one might imagine. Notably, Elliott’s return to the spotlight with his kettle antics previously garnered praise from the Salvation Army, which acknowledged the joyous celebration.

Interestingly, a comment from the organization highlighted the differences in such celebrations, referring to past occasions where such antics were not met with penalties.

Yet, the following year marked the onset of the NFL’s perplexing pattern of penalizing celebrations.

Fast forward to 2017, when Seahawks cornerback Justin Coleman jumped into a kettle after scoring a touchdown. Although he didn’t face a fine, he did receive a penalty during that match.

Elliott celebrated again in 2018, but this time faced a hefty fine of $13,369 from the NFL.

By 2022, the situation had only grown more confusing for players and fans alike. Three Cowboys players participated in yet another kettle celebration with no repercussions whatsoever. A week later, however, when Elliott and quarterback Dak Prescott joined in, they were fined $13,261 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Then, during Thanksgiving 2023, a carefully orchestrated celebration had four Cowboys players not facing any fines for indulging in turkey legs placed in a kettle.

The Salvation Army’s response to this celebration in 2025 was notably absent, with no mention made, aside from sharing a promotion featuring Post Malone.
