Investigation Underway After Shooting at Birthday Party in Stockton
A tragic shooting during a child’s birthday celebration in Stockton, California, on Saturday night resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including three children.
The incident took place just before 6 p.m. at a banquet hall, leading to 11 additional injuries, though the current conditions of those hurt remain unclear.
The slain children were identified as being 8, 9, and 14 years old. Additionally, a 21-year-old man also lost his life in this horrifying event, according to Heather Brent, a spokesperson for the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.
“This was a young child’s birthday party. The fact that something like this happened is truly heartbreaking,” Brent expressed on Sunday.
She also noted, “early indications suggest this may be a targeted incident, and investigators are exploring all possibilities.”
Brent added, “This is a very active and ongoing investigation, and information remains limited.”
As of now, the suspect is still on the loose, and authorities have not established a clear motive for the shooting.
San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas stated, “We are doing everything in our power to bring those responsible for this case to justice.”
He urged anyone with information to come forward: “If you have any information about this person, please contact us immediately. If you are this person, please come forward immediately.”
The FBI has joined the investigation, and California Governor Gavin Newsom has instructed his Office of Emergency Services to collaborate with local law enforcement.
Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi released a heartfelt statement, saying, “Today is Thanksgiving weekend, a time for families to come together, celebrate, share memories, and give love to one another.”
She continued, “Heaven is made a little bit bigger by the individuals, children and adults who unfortunately couldn’t be there tonight. Stockton is better than this.”
Fugazi emphasized, “Families should be together, not in the hospital, standing next to their loved ones and praying that they survive.”
Local faith leaders organized a vigil for Sunday afternoon to honor the victims and pray for the well-being of those still injured.
