WNBA and Players Association Extend Collective Bargaining Agreement
The WNBA and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association have decided to extend the existing collective bargaining agreement, which was set to expire on Sunday night at 11:59 p.m.
This extension pushes the deadline back to 11:59 p.m. on January 9, allowing an additional six weeks for negotiations.
Notably, either party can end this extension with just 48 hours’ notice.
This agreement not only extends the deadline but also averts a potential work stoppage. It gives both sides more time to engage in discussions while working towards a resolution.
In the meantime, players will still be able to access team facilities and enjoy their medical benefits.
Negotiations for a new deal have ramped up in recent months as the original deadline approached on October 31. Remarkably, players agreed to the WNBA’s 30-day extension offer just a day before the deadline.
Even with this new timeline, there are still several unresolved issues between the two sides, which is a bit concerning. The main hurdles appear to be around revenue sharing and various compensation models.
While recent proposals have been exchanged, no agreements have been finalized yet. The league’s latest offer reportedly includes a maximum annual salary that could exceed $1.1 million, which incorporates both a player’s base salary and revenue-sharing potential.
Interestingly, reports suggest that supermax base salaries would likely fall between $800,000 and $850,000. The proposed minimum salary would surpass $220,000, and the average salary could exceed $460,000.
It’s worth noting that the WNBA has never canceled games due to labor disputes. However, it’s not unusual for talks to stretch past the deadlines that have been set. During the previous CBA discussions, an agreement wasn’t reached until January 2020.
Meanwhile, the league’s offseason activities, including drafts and free agency, are on hold until a new CBA is established. The last expansion draft took place on December 6, 2024, with free agency expected to commence later in January and the college draft slated for April.
