Obamacare is not working and requires straightforward healthcare changes.

It’s time for a reality check: many believe Obamacare just hasn’t worked. The Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, seems to have benefitted insurance companies and hospitals more than the average American. For instance, it hasn’t allowed people to keep their existing plans or doctors as promised, leading to high costs for families, who often find that the care they receive doesn’t fit their needs.

There’s a family that often comes to mind when I think about healthcare challenges in the U.S. They grew up in public housing and didn’t often see a doctor. One of the kids suffered from a hip condition, and their mother had to drive 200 miles to a hospital for treatment. That story hits close to home—it’s reflective of my own upbringing.

When I hear about families struggling to afford insurance premiums or having to delay treatment because of costs, it reminds me of what my family went through. The current system seems to fail families like mine, creating a negative impact on their ability to access necessary healthcare.

Many, including some from both parties, agree that Obamacare hasn’t reduced healthcare costs. I genuinely want everyone to have access to affordable healthcare, a goal that the Affordable Care Act aimed for. It’s time for action to improve this situation.

I believe we can make sensible adjustments to Obamacare. I’ve been collaborating with President Trump and colleagues on proposals that would modify the existing system, making healthcare more accessible and affordable for families. We’re not suggesting to eliminate Obamacare entirely—it will still exist. Instead, we aim to enhance state interactions with healthcare.gov to ensure protections, particularly for those with pre-existing conditions, so that no one is left without coverage.

This plan isn’t about less choice; rather, it’s about increasing options for families. It’s about treating Americans like consumers and empowering them to make informed choices. That includes redirecting tax dollars away from insurance companies, allowing families to shop for insurance across state lines, and promoting transparency in pricing so families can understand their healthcare costs better.

Right now, people can typically only buy insurance within their home state. This doesn’t seem right. If there’s a great insurance plan available in Kansas, why can’t families in Georgia have access to it? By enabling interstate sales of insurance plans, we could enhance competition and drive down prices, leading to improved choices for families.

Just like shopping for clothes or groceries—where you’re not restricted to local stores—you should be able to find the best insurance options available, no matter where they are offered. And yes, we absolutely need to maintain those important protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions throughout this process.

If we stop sending taxpayer money to insurance companies and provide support directly to families through something like Health Freedom Accounts, we would be empowering families to understand their own needs and select appropriate plans. This enables them to make better decisions for their well-being than any government intervention might.

Additionally, boosting transparency means hospitals and healthcare providers would need to publicly share negotiated prices and costs. Families could then see upfront what to expect in terms of medical expenses, allowing them to plan accordingly.

We have a real chance to implement straightforward changes that can significantly benefit American families. By reshaping the existing model, we can move away from a system that led to fewer choices and higher costs, toward one that offers more options, lower expenses, and a better overall experience.

It’s abundantly clear that Obamacare has not delivered on its promises. The time has come to create a healthcare system that allows Americans to freely access the care they need without unnecessary barriers.
