Kate and Oliver Hudson Discuss Family Dynamics and Politics
Kate Hudson and her brother Oliver recently opened up about how their family navigates differing political beliefs on their podcast, “Brother’s Revelry.” In an episode that included guests like former White House chief of staff and Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, the importance of family was a focal point.
Kate shared insights about their family interactions, mentioning that they hold “a lot of different beliefs.” Despite this, they make it a habit to engage in conversation, even if it sometimes leads to arguments. She emphasized that in the end, they always come back together.
Oliver, 49, and Kate, 46, are the children of actress Goldie Hawn and musician Bill Hudson, who split in 1982. Goldie started a relationship with actor Kurt Russell shortly after, and they’ve been together ever since.
Before wrapping up, Emanuel expressed gratitude for the Hudsons’ focus on family conversations. He remarked that discussions about family are often overlooked in society and acknowledged the significance of making personal choices outside of one’s career.
Oliver reflected on how crucial family discussions are, especially in finding common ground despite different viewpoints, which he believes is fundamental to any tight-knit relationship.
“What’s really relatable about family discussions is that they transcend political divides. If you can talk and share, you can often find some common ground,” he pointed out.
Kate echoed her brother’s sentiment, mentioning that their family’s willingness to discuss, argue, and share can sometimes lead to noise, but the underlying desire to be together remains strong. “We may not want to be around each other sometimes, but we definitely enjoy talking,” Emanuel quipped.
The siblings shared their concluding thoughts after the discussion. Oliver humorously referred to Emanuel as “amazing,” expressing how politically involved he would feel compelled to support him if he ran for president. Kate added that everyone has a calling to serve, which resonates with her perspective on the arts being a form of public service as well.
They discussed the impact that art and storytelling can have on people, emphasizing how these mediums can effect change in lives. Kate touched on how films or music can provoke self-reflection and motivate change in one’s life choices, drawing parallels between creativity and public service.
Oliver joked about the influence of his past roles and stated that while his character on “Dawson’s Creek” may have made a mark, Kate’s work resonates even more with people today. “It’s fascinating how our experiences through art can evoke such powerful emotions and even shift someone’s way of thinking,” he noted.
Kate concluded by expressing a desire to further explore the political realm, highlighting her curiosity about diverse perspectives beyond just entertainment.
