Instagram Enforces In-Office Policy for U.S. Employees

Instagram, led by Mark Zuckerberg, has mandated that U.S.-based workers return to the office five days a week, starting February 2. This information was confirmed by a spokesperson on Tuesday.

The new policy impacts employees with assigned desks in U.S. offices, as outlined in a recent internal memo from Instagram’s chief, Adam Mosseri, titled “Building a Winning Culture in 2026,” which was shared internally on Monday.

In the memo, Mosseri expressed his belief that creativity and collaboration thrive best in face-to-face settings. He mentioned having felt this even before the pandemic, noting his experiences at the New York office, where he perceives a strong culture of in-person interaction.

Interestingly, the five-day rule does not extend to remote employees or those working for other Meta-owned platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. From September 2023, Meta plans to enforce a three-day in-office requirement for its employees.

Mosseri reassured Instagram staff that they still have the option to work from home if necessary, encouraging them to use their discretion in adapting to this new schedule.

As part of an initiative to enhance office presence, he also mentioned plans to simplify operations, proposing to cancel regular non-essential meetings twice a year. This seems like a good step, right? It might help reduce some of the busywork.

Mosseri acknowledged that addressing “space constraints” at the New York office will be a priority before fully executing this new in-person requirement.

This memo was first highlighted by Sources Newsletter, with a Meta representative confirming its validity but not offering additional comments.

In similar moves across the industry, companies like Amazon have required full weeks in-office, whereas Microsoft and Uber have adopted a three-day hybrid model recently.
