Federal Judge Blocks Trump’s Medicaid Funding Cuts
A federal judge has stepped in, preventing the Trump administration from enforcing significant parts of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, specifically aimed at cutting Medicaid funding for family planning programs across 22 states.
Indira Talwani, a district judge in Boston, noted that the law could likely impose unconstitutional conditions retroactively on states participating in Medicaid. While she issued a preliminary injunction to halt the funding cuts, she has put a seven-day pause on that ruling to allow the administration to consider an appeal.
Earlier in July, Talwani extended a temporary restraining order, blocking the administration’s ability to reduce Medicaid funding for specific family planning centers. She decided that the law’s funding restrictions impacting organizations, such as Planned Parenthood, which receive significant Medicaid reimbursements, cannot be enforced in Massachusetts and Utah.
The court mandated that Planned Parenthood post $100 bail by July 15, 2025, and will keep the injunction in place at least until July 21, unless further judgment is made. This ruling provides a temporary win for Planned Parenthood, protecting Medicaid funding as the legal disputes continue. They argued that enforcing the law would severely disrupt healthcare services for Medicaid recipients.
