Lane Kiffin Takes Over as Head Coach at LSU
The drama in college football has reached a significant turning point. Lane Kiffin, who spent six years as head coach of Ole Miss, flew to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, last Sunday.
On Monday, Kiffin was officially welcomed as the new head coach of LSU. In response to his departure, Ole Miss quickly promoted Pete Golding, the former defensive coordinator, to take over as head coach.
While Kiffin’s exit generated a lot of discussion, Bomani Jones, a former ESPN host and now a sports commentator, shifted the narrative towards Golding, Kiffin’s chosen successor.
Jones didn’t hold back in critiquing Golding’s time at Ole Miss, even proposing some thoughts about his appearance.
“I recognized his name. I saw his picture and thought, ‘No way is this guy the head coach…'” Jones remarked.
Golding has nearly 20 years of coaching experience but this will mark his first chance to lead a program in a Power Four conference.
During Kiffin’s final season, he led the Rebels to a victory over Mississippi State. Although Ole Miss didn’t qualify for this week’s SEC Championship Game, they remain in a solid position to enter the College Football Playoff.
As the Rebels prepare for their upcoming game, it will be Golding’s first opportunity to showcase his leadership as head coach. After discussions with Ole Miss Athletic Director Keith Carter and school president Glenn Boyce, Kiffin realized it was time to move on from Ole Miss.
Kiffin expressed his desire to guide the Rebels to the playoffs, emphasizing the significance of their recent successes. He aimed to finish strong and ensure the program was prepared for future challenges.
LSU had previously parted ways with Brian Kelly in late October after a disappointing home loss to Texas A&M.
