In Tennessee’s special election, Republican Matt Van Epps has emerged victorious over Democrat Aftin Behn, filling the seat left vacant by former Representative Mark Green.
The results were called by a news agency on Tuesday night, with Van Epps securing 52.2% of the vote, amounting to approximately 79,926 votes. He will now represent the state’s seventh congressional district for the remainder of Green’s term until the midterms next year.
Green stepped down from his position earlier this year, seeking an opportunity in the private sector that he felt he couldn’t turn down.
Leading up to the election, various polls indicated a competitive race. Notably, just before voting, former President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson called in to a rally supporting Van Epps, highlighting the significance of their backing.
Meanwhile, although former Vice President Kamala Harris did not endorse Behn, she participated in a canvassing event for Democrats in Nashville. During her appearance, she hinted at the urgency for Democrat voters to engage, noting that “the election is 14 days away.”
Following the announcement of the race’s outcome, Trump took to a social media platform to share his congratulations with Van Epps.
“Congratulations to Matt Van Epps on his BIG Congressional WIN in the Great State of Tennessee. The Radical Left Democrats threw everything at him, including Millions of Dollars. Another great night for the Republican Party!!! President DJT” he commented.
This recent shift in Tennessee politics illustrates the continuing influence of the Republican party within the state, amidst a backdrop of heated electoral campaigns.
