Allegation that players requested Kiffin to coach Ole Miss denied

Lane Kiffin’s Departure from Ole Miss Sparks Controversy

Lane Kiffin revealed that some players had urged athletic director Keith Carter to keep him as head coach at Ole Miss, a claim that has since been disputed by the team. In Kiffin’s statement, he mentioned his ambition to “lead Ole Miss to the playoffs and finish a historic sixth season with the current squad,” yet Carter maintained that the suggestion of keeping Kiffin was not supported by the players.

Starting center Brycen Sanders voiced criticism of Kiffin, addressing comments made by Kiffin on X. “Despite the team asking me to continue coaching,” he stated, “everyone in the room would disagree.” It’s noteworthy that Sanders slightly misquoted Kiffin, but his sentiments about Kiffin’s exit are clear. Other teammates, like offensive lineman Jaden Williams, responded to Sanders, seemingly challenging the narrative. “Let us know. One by one,” he urged. Linebacker Santalin Perkins added, “That’s not the message you said in the conference room. Everyone who was there can vouch for this.”

Kiffin left Ole Miss to join LSU after much speculation. He was officially introduced as the Tigers’ new head coach on Monday, just a day after facing boos while leaving Oxford on a private jet.

Kiffin’s offensive coordinator, Charlie Weis Jr., has chosen to follow him to LSU, although he will continue coaching Ole Miss for their upcoming playoff run. Kiffin acknowledged the difficulties of the transition, saying, “Keith Carter is trying to find a path to make this playoff run successful. At the end of the day, it’s his decision, and I fully respect that.” He expressed well wishes for his former team, wishing he could still be their coach while hoping they succeed in winning a national championship.

Reportedly, Kiffin’s contract with LSU includes a salary of approximately $13 million annually, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football.

In the wake of Kiffin’s departure, Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding has been appointed as the new head coach.
