New York City Mayoral Election Results
Zoran Mamdani has secured a decisive victory in the New York City mayoral election, outpacing competitors including Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa. However, those were not his only challengers.
In an interesting twist, sports enthusiasts in the city cast their votes for various athletes. Notably, two prominent figures—Aaron Judge and Jalen Brunson—garnered a significant number of votes. Judge, a three-time American League MVP, received 11 votes, while Brunson, who plays for the New York Knicks, received 29 votes, albeit with some voters struggling to spell his name correctly.
Derek Jeter was mentioned on one ballot, Pete Alonso on three, and Jackson Dart, the quarterback for the New York Giants, received six votes despite a spelling error. Even Lou Gehrig, who passed away in 1939, secured one vote.
This year’s ballot also included several notable current and former New York sports figures such as Cam Schrittler, Cam Scatterbo, Carmelo Anthony, Garrett Wilson, Aaron Glenn, Josh Hart, Tom Thibodeau, and Walt Frazier. Interestingly, Sandy Koufax and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred received votes as well.
Strangely enough, votes weren’t solely cast for beloved local icons. Some turned to long-time rivals: former Giant and current Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley received one vote, and New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye also made an appearance on one ballot. Jalen Hurts, the Eagles quarterback, even found his name among the votes.
For some context, former President Joe Biden received two votes, while Nancy Pelosi had one.
Ultimately, Mamdani’s overwhelming support means that no players will be inducted next year. He is set to take office in 2026.
