Clippers coach Tyronn Lue shares his perspective on the difficult split from Chris Paul.

Chris Paul’s Tough Season with the Clippers

Chris Paul, who is a future Hall of Famer, found himself let go by the Clippers during a challenging farewell season. But it seems there’s more beneath the surface.

Coach Tyronn Lue and Paul had been at odds for weeks leading up to the point guard’s release on Wednesday. Reports suggested that Paul was attempting to shift the blame for the team’s disappointing season onto his teammates.

“Things didn’t unfold as we hoped. I don’t believe it worked for him,” Lue commented to the media, indicating that the decision was made at the organizational level.

“Honestly, I don’t want to see CP go out like this. I have a lot of respect for him—he’s been a friend for a long time. It’s tough to witness a great career end this way. But I’m sure he’ll find his way, because he’s that talented.”

While Lue had a say in the process, the final call came from Clippers president Lawrence Frank.

As for Paul, he allegedly wanted to discuss claims of negativity about his presence on the team with the Clippers’ leadership. However, Lue declined the opportunity to meet.

Frank eventually traveled to Atlanta to personally inform Paul of his dismissal.

Paul had come to the Clippers with high hopes of competing for a championship, intending to retire after the season. His time there spanned six impressive seasons, but that dream didn’t materialize during a disappointing 5-16 season, with the team barely avoiding the lottery.

Now at 40, Paul isn’t the player he once was. He previously excelled during the Lob City era in Los Angeles back in the early 2010s. In 16 appearances this season, he logged just 14.3 minutes per game, averaging 2.9 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.8 rebounds.

It’s uncertain if another team will offer Paul a second chance in what could be his final season, though there have been reports of interest from the Knicks this offseason.
