Brian McKnight Jr. Discusses Estranged Relationship with Father
Brian McKnight Jr. has shared poignant details about his estranged father, Brian McKnight, and their family dynamics, particularly surrounding the death of his brother, Nico, who succumbed to cancer.
In a recent interview with Marc Lamont Hill, Brian Jr. reflected on the heartbreaking moment when Nico called him, distraught and facing death. “I remember that vividly. One of the darkest days of my life,” he said. He expressed regret about his father’s inability to express love to Nico in those final moments. All Nico wanted was to hear those words: “I want to tell him he was right in telling his dad not to call him,” Brian Jr. stated.
He described his father’s response with disappointment, noting that Nico had simply wanted to hear “I love you” from him. “My father replied, ‘I can’t just say I love him,'” Brian Jr. recounted. It raises the question—was there ever a genuine attempt to reach out?
These family struggles began to come to light in October 2023 when the elder McKnight announced on social media that he had legally changed the name of his son, whom he shares with wife Leilani Mendoza, to make himself a senior. This decision seemed quite confusing, as he was already a senior to his eldest son, Brian Jr.
In a statement made the following year, the 56-year-old R&B artist caused further controversy by declaring that he would not adopt his estranged biological children because they were “products of sin.” This sentiment was shared during an Instagram Q&A, where he emphasized the need to eliminate negativity from his life, even if that meant distancing himself from his own children.
Fans reacted strongly, with one suggesting his actions were against divine will. Brian responded defensively, stating, “God is not talking about products of sin like children,” urging them to seek the entire story before casting judgment.
Fast forward to January 2024, when Nico, whose real name was Cole Nicholas McKnight, announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Brian has two sons, Brian Jr. and Nico, with ex-wife Julie McKnight, along with a daughter named Brianna from a previous relationship. Reports indicated that Brian had intended to aid Nico in his battle but subsequently halted assistance due to alleged hostile communications from Julie.
Brian expressed frustration about the situation, mentioning that the family had to follow Julie’s wishes, distancing themselves from the conflict. Julie, in response, pointed fingers at Brian, labeling him a liar in an exclusive statement.
Sadly, Nico passed away in May following his fight against cancer. Posthumously, sources revealed to Page Six that Brian McKnight had “no contact” with his family during this time.
Though he missed an opportunity to reconnect with Nico, Brian claimed that he and his family created a personal monument in Maui to honor their memories together. After this tragic loss, he mentioned on social media that he achieved a significant legal victory in a defamation case against Julie when she failed to appear in court.
