Lily Wachowski’s Journey of Self-Discovery
At 57, Lily Wachowski remains deeply engaged in personal exploration.
She and her sibling, Lana Wachowski, known collectively as the Wachowski brothers, gained fame for creating the iconic film series, The Matrix. Interestingly, both have come out as transgender.
Lily transitioned in 2016, while Lana did so four years earlier, in 2012. Since their transitions, they have reinterpreted their earlier work, describing the Matrix trilogy as a kind of “trance metaphor” back in 2020.
A New Perspective
In a recent interview, Lily discussed her evolving understanding of her creative output and identity. Reflecting on her past work, she feels a new clarity about how it connects to her experiences as a transgender person.
“Looking back at my body of work from this high vantage point has changed everything. For instance, in
Bound, the very first scene involves a closet. It’s a strong visual cue we had to examine more closely.”
Both Lily and Lana pointed out that The Matrix explored themes of liberation, identity, and freedom. They argued that art can reveal truths that often go unnoticed and function as a platform for telling stories about love, including those pertinent to transgender experiences.
“Much of what we wrote was about love,” Lily explained. “We needed a framework, a narrative that made us feel love was real. As a transgender person, that dark thought—’Who is going to love this?’—sparked a reminder of the future we could create.”
The Impact of Trans Identity
Lily also highlighted the concept of “trans rage” as a productive force behind her creativity.
Back in 2017, she and her partner began developing a script centered on transgender themes, channeling their fears and frustrations into the narrative. A few years later, she served as an executive producer on the Showtime series, A Work in Progress, showcasing a self-identified queer dyke, Abbie McEnany. In 2021, the sisters returned to their writing endeavors, seeking catharsis in a world increasingly hostile to transgender individuals.
Lily used her frustration to evoke caricatures, imagining an “ideal family” and a supportive community where transgender people could come together for each other.
Box Office Struggles
However, the Wachowskis’ new artistic direction hasn’t been without its challenges.
The fourth installment in the Matrix series, The Matrix Resurrections, which premiered in December 2021, underperformed at the box office, bringing in only about $38 million against a budget of $190 million. This figure is significantly less than the $139 million grossed by the previous installment, The Matrix Revolutions, and notably lower than the over $280 million made by The Matrix Reloaded in 2003.
To think, the original Matrix film made $171 million back in 1999.
