ACC commissioner supports Bill Belichick following challenging season at UNC

Bill Belichick has found allies within the ACC office.

Commissioner Jim Phillips mentioned in an interview that, despite a challenging start for the North Carolina football program, Belichick deserves time to demonstrate his abilities.

“I’m really optimistic about the future of North Carolina State football,” Phillips said. “There was a tough transition, and having one of the sport’s winningest coaches is a big advantage. He truly deserves your patience and support. I believe he has a solid plan moving forward.”

During his first year, things didn’t go as planned for Belichick and the Tar Heels.

They recorded a disappointing 4-8 overall and a mere 2-6 against ACC teams, which put them among the lowest in the conference.

The season kicked off poorly with a significant loss to TCU. While they managed to secure victories against teams like Charlotte and Richmond, they only snagged wins against other struggling ACC teams, such as Syracuse and Stanford.

Ultimately, they ended their season with a three-game losing streak, taking losses against Wake Forest, Duke, and North Carolina State.

Off the field, the situation was complicated further by ongoing drama involving Belichick’s 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, who has been seen on the sidelines multiple times this season.

After the final game, Belichick was brief during a four-minute media session.

“Look, the season just wrapped up,” he told reporters following the loss to North Carolina State. “We’ll focus on the offseason now.”

“I’m not able to sum up the season,” he continued. “I don’t have a summary; we’ve never done that.”

Belichick signed a substantial five-year, $50 million contract with UNC before this season began.

Although he has consistently expressed his dedication to UNC for next year, interest from NFL teams hasn’t waned.

Reports indicate that at least two NFL teams have inquired about him, highlighting the ongoing upheaval in the coaching cycle.
