Farage's Reform UK Party Sets Up Account Following Debanking

Reform UK Opens Bank Account Amid Controversy

Nigel Farage, known for his staunch abolitionist views and as a prominent Brexit advocate, has revealed that his party, Reform UK, has successfully opened a bank account. This might seem ordinary; however, given the backdrop of Britain’s finance industry grappling with cancel culture, it carries significant weight.

Farage, who spearheaded the movement against what he terms “woke banking” after a sudden account closure in 2023 left him in a financial bind, expressed relief at this development. The Reform UK account is now with Lloyds, a high street bank. This transition indicates a broader acceptance of Farage and his party within the British establishment, moving from the periphery to a more mainstream position.

Previously, Reform UK had to depend on specialized fund management services for its financial dealings. So, while opening a bank account might not seem monumental to some, the ongoing issue of debanking is quite serious in the UK. Many banking institutions are reportedly using government currency regulations as a pretext to close accounts, targeting a variety of organizations and businesses, often with little justification.

Reflecting on this new milestone, Farage noted, “This is a significant moment for Reform UK. It shows how far we have come as a party, and I look forward to a fruitful and positive partnership with Lloyds.”

Farage’s banking troubles began when Coutts, part of the NatWest Group, closed his account in 2023, triggering a scandal that ultimately resulted in the resignation of several senior executives, including the CEO. Initially, the bank claimed that the account closure was an innocent mistake. However, internal documents revealed that the decision had political motivations behind it, aiming to sever ties with individuals holding unpopular views.

Leaked messenger memos from NatWest showed bankers discussing their actions against Farage with a mix of pride and disdain. One message even remarked on Farage’s social media presence, suggesting that his tweets had affected his ability to secure banking services.

During the uproar, Farage stated, “The establishment is trying to close my bank accounts and force me out of the UK… If they can do it to me, they can do it to you too.” This predicament led to a scandal that resulted in the resignation of Dame Alison Rhodes, the former bank president, after it was revealed that she had leaked Farage’s personal information in a bid to tarnish his reputation.
