Controversy During Turning Point USA Event in El Paso
Tom Homan, the border czar, faced off against a heckler calling him a “racist” and a “traitor” during a Turning Point USA event in El Paso, Texas. This altercation occurred as Homan discussed the safety concerns surrounding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, as well as the situation of undocumented immigrants. Some attendees voiced their discontent with Homan’s strict policies on illegal immigration.
“Call me whatever you want, I don’t care,” Homan responded to the protesters.
One heckler persisted with shouts of “Traitor.” Homan retorted, expressing that he would take questions but only from those willing to stand up for border security: “But when you grow a spine, put on your Kevlar vest, put your gun on your hip, and go defend this border.”
Additionally, another audience member accused Homan of indirectly supporting Patrick Crusius, who murdered nearly 20 people in a 2019 Walmart shooting. Crusius is now serving a life sentence for this tragic event. The accusation suggested that Crusius was motivated by a belief in the replacement theory concerning Hispanics.
In defense, Homan stated, “What I said was that opening the borders was an act, it was a disruption, and it was planned.” Under Homan’s leadership, ICE has seen record numbers of arrests and intensified operations nationwide. It was noted that Homan had to separate from his wife due to receiving death threats related to his job.
Furthermore, reports indicate that since President Trump assumed office, incidents of violence against ICE agents have increased by approximately 1,150%, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
