Texas Congressional map receives approval from the Supreme Court

Supreme Court Approves Texas GOP’s Redrawn Congressional Maps

The U.S. Supreme Court has sided with Texas Republicans regarding their recently redrawn congressional maps, potentially leading to five additional seats for the GOP in the House of Representatives.

On Thursday, the court, with a conservative majority of 6-3, approved Texas’s request to reverse a previous ruling from a lower court that had blocked the new map.

“The district court improperly inserted itself into an active primary campaign, causing confusion and disturbing the delicate federal-state balance in elections,” stated the Supreme Court in an unsigned order.

The lower court had expressed concern that the voting districts in Texas might have been drawn with racial considerations in mind, which would indicate unlawful gerrymandering. It directed the state to revert to the maps utilized after the 2020 census for the upcoming midterm elections.

“The public perception of this case is that it’s about politics. To be sure, politics played a role in drawing the 2025 Map,” noted U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Brown in his opinion. “But it was more than just politics. Substantial evidence shows that Texas racially gerrymandered the 2025 Map.”

The three liberal justices on the Supreme Court expressed dissent against the decision.

Justice Elena Kagan reiterated concerns about the racial gerrymandering in a dissenting opinion alongside Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

“We are a higher court than the district court, but we are not a better one when it comes to making such a fact-based decision,” Kagan remarked.

She added, “This court’s stay guarantees that Texas’s new map, with its significant partisan advantage, will apply for the next House elections. And this decision means that many Texas citizens, for no substantial reason, will be placed in electoral districts based on their race—violating the constitution.”

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin declared the Supreme Court’s ruling a setback for Texas voters.

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to allow Texas Republicans’ rigged, racially gerrymandered maps to go into effect is wrong—both morally and legally,” Martin stated. “Once again, the Supreme Court has given Trump exactly what he wanted: a manipulated map to help Republicans evade accountability in the midterms. But it will backfire.”

Meanwhile, Republicans are celebrating this ruling.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton commented on the decision, saying, “Texas is paving the way as we take our country back, district by district, state by state. This map reflects the political climate of our state and is a massive win for Texas and every conservative who is tired of seeing the left disrupt the political system with frivolous lawsuits.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott took to social media, exclaiming, “We won!”

“Texas is officially—and legally—more red,” he added. “The Supreme Court has restored the congressional redistricting maps passed by Texas, adding five more Republican seats. The new maps align our representation in D.C. with Texas’s values.”
