Omar Defends Undocumented Somali Immigrants
Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota stated on Thursday that undocumented Somali immigrants are safeguarded by the 14th Amendment and suggested that they are unlikely to leave the United States. She made these comments during an appearance on a talk show, asserting that many of these individuals, despite lacking legal status, consider themselves Americans and “are not going anywhere.”
This statement comes amid heightened efforts from the Trump administration to enforce immigration laws more aggressively, particularly concerning undocumented Somalis in Minnesota. Reports allege that state welfare funds have been misused in connection with the terrorist group al-Shabab, responsible for the deaths of several Americans.
“As Somalis, we identify as Americans. That’s reflected in our passports—it’s our nationality,” Omar remarked. “We know we are protected by the 14th Amendment, and there’s no chance of us leaving. Perhaps if he really took a moment to engage with us, he’d recognize that we stand strong against hatred and disrespect targeted at us or our community.”
Meanwhile, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has intensified operations aimed at deporting Somali nationals in the Minneapolis and St. Paul areas, focusing particularly on those with final removal orders. This crackdown follows President Trump’s remarks expressing a desire to limit immigration from certain countries.
In another development, federal prosecutors are investigating claims that over $1 billion in taxpayer money was misappropriated from programs intended to support low-income families and children with autism. So far, there have been 59 fraud convictions linked to these social service programs.
Notably, nearly all of the 86 individuals charged in this case are of Somali heritage, as reported by a major news outlet.
Additionally, a recent case involving a Somali man, Karinlu Ibrahim Diri, highlighted serious criminal concerns. He received a 12-year prison sentence for kidnapping and assaulting a young girl. Contrast this with another suspect, Abdimahat Bir Mohamed, who faced allegations of serial rape but avoided imprisonment, which has sparked considerable outrage.
Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, a Democrat, criticized the federal government’s actions as a “public relations stunt,” asserting that they unfairly target immigrants. His administration has faced criticism for not adequately addressing issues surrounding welfare fraud.
In a social media post, President Trump took aim at Walz, calling him “severely mentally retarded” and accusing him of neglecting to prevent financial exploitation related to the Somali community’s tax contributions.
