Hugo Carvajal Barrios, a retired three-star general from Venezuela, once held significant power in the socialist administration of Caracas. Now, from his prison cell, he is drafting a letter to President Trump and the American people after admitting guilt in a drug-related conspiracy in the United States.
Some politicians, including Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), have criticized Trump for his stance towards Venezuelan drug traffickers. On the other hand, TV host Sarah Gonzalez, alongside Barrios, expresses full support for the President.
Gonzalez pointed out that Paul tends to hand out press releases suggesting that these individuals aren’t armed and that proof of their armament is required. She retorted, “Rand, do you know what they’re armed with? The drugs they’re bringing into our country to kill Americans.”
Barrios echoed Gonzalez’s sentiments in his letter. He emphasized the necessity of informing the American populace about the realities of the Venezuelan government and the importance of Trump’s policies for national security.
“I witnessed firsthand how the Hugo Chávez regime transformed into a criminal enterprise, operated now by Nicolás Maduro and others,” he stated. Barrios described this organization, identified as the Sunshine Cartel, asserting its intent to weaponize drugs against the U.S.
He argued that the influx of drugs into cities wasn’t merely a byproduct of corruption or independent traffickers; rather, it was a calculated strategy by the Venezuelan regime aimed at the United States.
Barrios further claimed that this strategy has been effectively executed with help from groups like FARC, ELN, Cuban operatives, and Hezbollah.
He mentioned, “The regime has supplied weapons, passports, and protection for these terror groups to act freely against the U.S. The government I once served is not just unfriendly; it is waging war on you, employing drugs, gangs, espionage, and even exploiting your democratic systems.”
Barrios added his unequivocal support for Trump’s approach toward Venezuela, which he sees as a form of self-defense based on truth.
Gonzalez noted that despite Barrios being imprisoned, he felt a strong need to clarify his thoughts on these matters. She said, “Whether Venezuela is armed with firearms or not, it’s rather understandable why the Trump administration would adopt such a firm position against the country… Innocent Americans are dying, but it doesn’t have to be this way because of the Venezuelan government.”
She concluded, “We need to do something about it.”
