Cultural Figures Advocate for Marwan Barghouti’s Release

Notable figures from Hollywood, including Mark Ruffalo, Tilda Swinton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sting, and Javier Bardem, have come together to sign an open letter demanding the release of Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti. Barghouti is currently serving five life sentences for his involvement in a terrorist attack that resulted in five deaths.

This petition has garnered support from over 200 actors, musicians, writers, and other influential cultural personalities. The letter was made public on Friday by Barghouti’s Release Campaign. Among the signatories are Sir Richard Branson, Margaret Atwood, Brian Eno, Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, and Sir Ian McKellen.

In 2004, an Israeli court convicted Barghouti for joining a terrorist organization and for five counts of murder linked to three violent attacks in Israel.

Prosecutors contended that Barghouti had connections to the Fatah, Tanzim, and the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, claiming he financed and supplied weapons to a group responsible for an assault that killed four Israelis and a Greek monk.

The petition calls on the United Nations and governments worldwide to take action toward Barghouti’s release. His family asserts that he faced unfair treatment during his trial and has experienced abusive conditions while incarcerated.

Barghouti, a former legislator, is still regarded as a leading figure among Palestinians, according to recent public opinion polls.

It’s worth noting that during an October negotiation effort involving Hamas, which involved a hostage exchange, Barghouti’s release was not secured despite discussions. The exchange saw the terrorist group relinquish 20 hostages in return for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
