Tesla’s Elon Musk Calls for Abolishing the European Union
Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, has expressed a strong opinion about the European Union, suggesting it should be dismantled in favor of national sovereignty. His comments came after the European Commission imposed a hefty fine of $140 million on his social media platform, X, for allegedly violating censorship laws.
Musk stated on his account, “The European Union should be abolished and sovereignty should be returned to individual countries so that governments can better represent their people.”
The fine was levied against X for purported violations of the Digital Services Act, a broad law designed to regulate content across the EU, particularly targeting hate speech and misinformation. This ongoing conflict isn’t new; Musk has faced scrutiny from the EU ever since he acquired the platform in 2022. There were even warnings against Musk for hosting a live interview with Donald Trump during last year’s presidential campaign.
This decision to fine X has the potential to strain relations between U.S. officials and European leaders, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commenting that it represents a foreign attack on American technology platforms. He emphasized, “The days of censoring Americans online are over.”
Moreover, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau criticized the EU, stating that it undermines U.S. security interests while relying on American military support. He expressed concerns that the EU’s actions are just the beginning of wider issues, referring to them as the “tip of the iceberg.”
Landau highlighted the contradictions in the U.S. relationship with NATO and the EU, noting that while European countries advocate for stronger ties in military matters, they often act contrary to U.S. interests in other areas, like censorship and immigration policies.
He further pointed out that the EU promotes various agendas that conflict with U.S. national interests, suggesting that the current situation cannot continue. He argued that either European nations are partners in defending Western civilization or they are not, emphasizing the need for a clearer stance on these issues.
These discussions come on the heels of former President Trump’s warning that Europe risks facing “the annihilation of civilization” through its globalist policies. The latest U.S. National Security Strategy warned that Europe could become “unrecognizable” if current policies persist. It suggested supporting patriotic parties in Europe to restore national individuality.
This assertive stance appears to have annoyed officials like German Foreign Minister Johann Vardepur, who remarked that Europe doesn’t require external guidance on democratic values. Germany, traditionally reliant on the U.S. for security, has faced criticism for prosecuting citizens over social media posts.
