Texas Tech Seizes Big 12 Championship

For the first time ever, Texas Tech has clinched the Big 12 title. On Saturday, the No. 4 Red Raiders showcased their strong defense, emerging victorious against No. 11 BYU with a score of 34-7 at AT&T Stadium. With this win, Texas Tech’s record improves to 12-1, marking a historic 12-win season for the program.

Interestingly, BYU started strong, scoring on their opening drive, but they struggled to find the end zone afterwards. Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, a strong Heisman Trophy contender, stood out with 13 tackles during the game.

The first quarter saw BYU ahead 7-0, but Texas Tech turned things around in the second quarter, scoring 13 points to take a 13-7 lead into halftime. Kicker Stone Harrington kicked a 23-yard field goal, giving Texas Tech their first points at 7-3. Although Harrington had a chance for a longer 48-yard field goal shortly after, he missed, leaving the score at 7-3.

After a missed field goal by BYU, they attempted a brave move on fourth down. Coach Kalani Sitake called for a fake punt on his own 42-yard line, but the pass fell incomplete.

Texas Tech’s quarterback, Behren Morton, connected with Coy Eakin for a 33-yard touchdown, elevating the Red Raiders to a 10-7 lead.

Throughout the first half, Texas Tech’s defense kept making stops against BYU, allowing for another field goal, which solidified their lead at halftime.

BYU’s third-quarter offense left much to be desired. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier faced challenges deep in his territory, and Texas Tech linebacker Ben Roberts intercepted his pass, setting up prime position for the Red Raiders.

Roberts wasn’t just a single-play wonder; he managed two interceptions during the game, including a particularly impressive one-handed catch in the fourth quarter.

Taking advantage of the interception, Texas Tech’s offense struck quickly. Running back Cameron Dickey rushed for an 11-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 21-7. A subsequent field goal increased their score to 24-7.

Coy Eakin’s second touchdown catch of the game secured the victory. Morton delivered a precise pass, and Eakin did the rest, scoring from 24 yards out.

This triumph not only marks a historical moment for Texas Tech but also grants them a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff.
