Ukraine Faces Major Drone Attack Amid Ongoing Talks

This week, while discussions were ongoing between Ukraine and the U.S. in Florida, Russia initiated a significant assault on Ukraine overnight.

Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia deployed 653 drones and 51 missiles across the country, resulting in injuries to eight individuals.

French President Emmanuel Macron denounced the attack in a letter, stating, “We must maintain pressure on Russia to progress towards peace.”

Macron also mentioned that he plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the leaders of the UK and Germany in London on Monday.

In an interesting turn, a former CIA bureau chief expressed concerns that President Putin might be using the talks to strengthen his influence as the Ukrainian delegation engages with top officials from the Trump administration.

On Saturday, President Zelenskyy revealed that he had a “substantive telephone conversation” with U.S. representatives involved in the Miami discussions.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff shared details from the meeting, which included Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law. The statement described the discussion as a “constructive” step towards establishing a viable path for lasting peace in Ukraine.

Both parties underscored the pressing need to end the conflict, suggesting that credible measures towards a ceasefire are essential to prevent further aggression and outline a comprehensive redevelopment strategy for Ukraine, aiming to strengthen the nation post-war.

Following the Russian attack on Friday night, Ukraine’s air force reported that it managed to strike 29 locations, successfully downing 585 drones and 30 missiles. Among those injured, three were from the Kyiv region, according to local officials.

The International Atomic Energy Agency revealed that the attacks had major implications, specifically targeting local power facilities, with the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant temporarily losing power during the assault.

Although under Russian control, Zaporizhzhia is critical as it requires electricity to cool down its inactive reactors, which is vital to prevent a potential disaster.

In a disturbing update, President Zelenskyy remarked that the drone strike had “burned down” a train station in Fastiv, near Kyiv.

Following this, the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced their own retaliation, striking Russia’s Ryazan oil refinery in response.
