NEED TO KNOW

For years, a 17-year-old girl faced relentless criticism from her family about her weight.
-
Her brother went to the extreme of mocking her by suggesting she would succumb to diabetes.
-
Then one day, he got news that prompted her to think karma had finally arrived.
Navigating family dynamics can be really tough, especially when body image and health become intertwined.
On Reddit, a user explained how her family repeatedly labeled her “fat,” despite her thriving older brother indulging in unhealthy habits—until an unexpected twist made her feel like karma was at play.
The girl detailed how her 21-year-old brother, referred to as J, was particularly vocal about her weight issues.
“For as long as I can remember, especially since puberty, my family has been relentless with calling me fat,” she shared. “I’m 140 pounds, which doctors say is perfectly normal, but to my family, I’m just considered overweight.”
She pointed out that J is the driving force behind the hurtful comments.
“He’s always saying I’m going to die from heart disease or end up with diabetes because I ‘eat too much,’” she mentioned. Curiously, she noted that he actually eats much more than she does and hardly exercises.
Yet her family defends him by insisting, “He’s a growing boy, so he needs to eat.”
Over the years, this double standard became evident during celebrations and family meals. While J enjoyed his cake on birthdays, she was skipped over, and when she prepared dinner, she was told to cook extra so he could indulge.
The imbalance didn’t stop there; she was often blamed for finishing off food, no matter what she actually consumed.
“A whole liter of juice? Just me, even if I only had a cup. Snacks? Yep, I’m the one who finished them. Leftovers? All me, no matter how much I try to show I didn’t eat them,” she lamented.
With time, she chose to stop contesting the accusations, realizing it was fruitless to argue with a family so determined to pin the blame on her.
“Eventually, I just gave up because I realized that fighting against a family that believes you consumed everything is pointless,” she reflected.
Then, things took an unexpected twist when J visited a doctor. He had been feeling unwell, describing symptoms like sluggishness and dehydration. After his check-up, he found out he had type 2 diabetes.
“I watched my mom and J staring at the test results in shock. Honestly, I let out a laugh because it was just so surprising,” the Reddit user recounted.
“J and my mom shot me looks of shame and anger. My mom insisted I get tested because, apparently, if J has it, I must too. But when my results came back clear, I laughed even more,” she added.
However, her mother later told relatives that she “laughed at my unfortunate brother instead of showing him sympathy, and now I’m facing criticism from everyone.”
This prompted her to seek opinions on Reddit regarding whether she was wrong for laughing at his diagnosis or whether her feelings were valid, given his long-standing behavior.
In a follow-up comment, she clarified that her laughter wasn’t due to a lack of concern for her brother’s health. She stated, “Diabetes is serious,” adding that since his diagnosis, she has been preparing his meals to help manage his condition.
“I make sure he eats things that won’t spike his sugar levels. Just because I laughed doesn’t mean I don’t care; he’s still my brother at the end of the day,” she explained.
This incident triggered a variety of reactions online.
Some users believed her brother got what he deserved for his bullying, while others felt laughing at a health crisis is inappropriate, shedding light on the complexities of family relationships.
