Sydney Sweeney channels Marilyn Monroe and Pamela Anderson at the 'Housemaid' premiere

Sidney Sweeney Discusses Hollywood Icons at Film Premiere

At the premiere of her new film, *The Housemaid*, Sidney Sweeney took the opportunity to highlight some Hollywood legends like Marilyn Monroe and Pamela Anderson.

Interestingly, Sweeney’s recent campaign for American Eagle seems to have made quite an impact. Apparently, her ads during the summer led to a 10% rise in the company’s stock price. In fact, a specific campaign called “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” reportedly increased the brand’s market value by around $400 million and doubled online traffic.

Branding expert Doug Eldridge recognizes the significance of Monroe and Anderson in shaping cultural imagery but suggests that Sweeney represents a broader evolution. “Monroe had her unique charm,” he said, “but in many ways, Sweeney captures that essence for today’s audience. The difference is that she actively chooses her roles and endorsements to demonstrate her talent and appeal. Plus, she’s not backing down from challenges posed by the so-called ‘woke crowd’ who criticized the campaign.

Turning Controversy into Success

Sweeney’s image often invites comparisons to Monroe, but it feels more like a fresh interpretation rather than mere mimicry. Eldridge commented, “She has a beauty reminiscent of Monroe’s, yet brings a depth that Monroe sometimes lacked. It’s important to note that she’s not trying to be a reincarnation; she’s the first Sydney Sweeney.”

Despite the mixed reactions to her clothing campaign, including some criticism for its tone, Sweeney openly expressed that she was taken aback by the backlash. “I really love jeans and the brand,” she stated. “I don’t align with many of the opinions tied to this campaign. I’m all about unity.”

Support has also come from unexpected places, even extending to remarks from the president.

Modern Icon vs. Historical Legend

While Monroe and Anderson are iconic representations of sex appeal from the past, Sweeney embodies a modernizing shift of that aesthetic. Eldridge observed that Sweeney commands a rare blend of commercial appeal and genuine confidence a bit different from what has come before.

Branding expert Steve Honig concurred, explaining that although Sweeney may not yet match Monroe’s legendary status, the comparisons are beneficial to her career. “Star power is not just about performance; it also hinges on how one is perceived off-screen,” he shared. “Her engagement with contemporary pop culture enhances her appeal.”
