McLaren’s Lando Norris Claims First F1 Title in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, UAE – Lando Norris from McLaren clinched his first Formula 1 championship on Sunday during the season finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

While Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the defending champion, took the race victory, Norris finished third, trailing his teammate Oscar Piastri, who secured second place. This outcome allowed Norris to edge Verstappen by just two points in the overall standings.

Piastri, aspiring for his first F1 title as well, concluded the season in third place, falling 13 points short of Norris.

At 26, Norris became the first British driver to win the championship since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, effectively denying Verstappen his fifth consecutive title.

Entering the finale, Norris had a 12-point advantage over Verstappen and was 16 points ahead of Piastri.

Verstappen started from pole position, with Norris beside him and Piastri in third. For Verstappen to reclaim the title, he needed Norris to finish fourth or lower. If Piastri were to win, that would further complicate Norris’s chances, requiring him to finish outside the top five.

Despite Verstappen’s remarkable late-season performance, which nearly flipped the table on both McLaren drivers, strategic errors from the team and driver contributed to their struggles.

Even with Verstappen achieving his eighth win of the season, which marked his 71st career victory, Norris maintained his composure amid intense pressure in the lead-up to this decisive race.

Celebrations erupted in McLaren’s camper, with CEO Zac Brown expressing his joy over the team radio. “Lando, this is Zack from McLaren. Is this the world champion hotline? You did it! That’s fantastic!” he exclaimed.

Norris was taken aback, laughing and crying at once. “Oh my god, thank you so much. I love you all. Thank you for everything,” he communicated through tears.

After the race, Norris lingered in his car, clearly emotional, before heading to embrace his parents, and then joined in the celebrations with his team’s engineers and mechanics.
