Lando Norris Crowned World Champion After Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Lando Norris is certainly on a high note right now. He clinched third place at the F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday night, securing a position in the Drivers’ World Championship. Remarkably, he finished just two points ahead of Max Verstappen and 13 points clear of his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri.
With emotion evident, Norris expressed gratitude to his family and the McLaren team for their support throughout his lengthy journey. “It feels amazing. I think I have an idea of what Max is feeling,” he said. “It was fun; it’s been a long year, but we made it. I’m so proud of everyone involved.” Norris becomes the 35th driver to earn the F1 World Championship title.
The season’s latter half brought increased competition. Norris had an impressive start, winning the first race, but Piastri surged ahead by claiming four victories in the following five events. Verstappen also added another win, overtaking Norris in the standings.
As the season progressed, Norris and Piastri dominated several mid-season races. However, Verstappen eventually broke an eight-race streak without a win, regaining his competitive edge after the Italian Grand Prix.
Following a series of strong performances, Verstappen emerged victorious in six of the last nine races, climbing to the top of the leaderboard. The disqualification at the Las Vegas Grand Prix made the championship race particularly thrilling for Norris and Piastri.
For both Verstappen and Piastri, it seemed like Norris would need to have a poor showing for their championship aspirations to remain alive, but he prevailed, securing the first F1 title of his career.
Norris ended Verstappen’s dominance as world champion; Verstappen had taken the last four championships. It’s worth noting that Lewis Hamilton was the last driver before Verstappen to clinch an F1 title, and he had an incredible run from 2014 to 2020, winning all but one year during that stretch.
What’s particularly remarkable is that Norris is the first McLaren driver to win since Hamilton in 2008.
