Conviction of Far-Left Activist in Assault Case
A prominent figure from France’s far-left Antifa group has been convicted of aggravated assault against a suspected right-wing activist, news emerged this week.
Raphaël Arnault, associated with the left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI) and serving as a spokesperson for the Lyon-based La Jeune Garde Antifasciste (Young Anti-Fascist Guard), received a four-month prison sentence in 2022 for participating in a group attack targeting individuals thought to be linked to a right-wing organization.
The victim, referred to only as Jeffrey L., reported that he was confronted by a group of six left-wing activists who encircled him and demanded access to his phone. Upon his refusal, they assaulted him, resulting in an arm injury. The victim distinctly named Arnault as one of the attackers.
Arnault, a seasoned street activist, initially appealed his conviction in 2022. However, he withdrew his appeal in March, leading to the confirmation of the aggravated assault conviction, as reported by le figaro. Alongside the suspended sentence, Arnault was ordered to pay €1,600 in damages.
During the court proceedings, Arnault explained that his group confronted Jeffrey L. because they were “fed up with activists like him targeting minorities over their sexual orientation or skin color.”
The Lyon Criminal Court imposed a suspended four-month sentence on Arnault, along with the damages for the assault that caused “one day of incapacity to work.”
Before the parliamentary elections last year, it was reported that Arnault was on an “S” file, indicating he was being monitored by French intelligence for potential extremism.
Regardless, the far-left LFI party backed his candidacy, leading to his election as a parliament member for the 1st constituency of Vaucluse.
At the same time, the French government announced plans to formally ban Arnault’s Antifa group in Lyon, citing concerns over their use of street violence as a tactic.
In defense of the Young Guard, Arnault described it as a crucial anti-fascist resource during current times, suggesting that the far right recognizes this and is actively attempting to dismantle the group.
This revelation about Arnault’s conviction follows the Trump administration’s designation of several Antifa groups in Europe as terrorist entities.
