Rise in Anti-Semitism in Philadelphia Schools Sparks Investigation

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s press secretary has stated that the Philadelphia School District needs to tackle the increasing incidents of anti-Semitism in its classrooms. This issue has recently prompted a legislative inquiry into the district, which is facing accusations of fostering anti-Jewish sentiment and hostility toward Israel.

According to Rosie Lapowski, a spokesperson for Governor Shapiro, the governor is adamant that anti-Semitism and any form of hate speech are intolerable in Pennsylvania, especially in educational settings. She emphasized that school districts must take this matter very seriously.

In interviews with parents and teachers from the School District of Philadelphia (SDP), Fox News Digital revealed concerns about a hostile environment for Jewish students. The House Education and Labor Committee’s recent letter mentioned an ongoing investigation into whether this environment exists in K-12 schools.

The committee highlighted allegations of widespread anti-Semitic incidents within SDP, including claims that teachers promote such views and that the district has allowed anti-Semitic actions that marginalize Jewish students. The letter noted that these issues have persisted, even after the district entered a corrective action plan with the U.S. Department of Education in December 2024.

Fox News Digital also obtained messages from a private messaging group of Palestinian educators in Philadelphia, which included discussions on justifying violence in the name of resistance. Critics pointed out that this rhetoric often crosses into incitement against Jews.

Micah Hackner, a director at the North American Values Institute, remarked on the serious implications of educators encouraging political activism among students, particularly when that activism can veer into political violence.

Concerns have arisen among Jewish parents and teachers, who reported feeling targeted within SDP, fearing retaliation for voicing their experiences. One parent accused a specific school official of using social media to incite hostility against Jewish individuals.

The Congressional letter brought up that SDP employs several educators who allegedly spread anti-Semitic narratives and that some have threatened Jewish families online. It also mentioned connections to educational materials that rationalize violence against Israel.

A retired Philadelphia teacher expressed dismay over the promotion of a pro-Palestinian bias and a lack of effective countermeasures against anti-Semitic sentiment in schools. She recounted recent events that have heightened tensions for Jewish educators, suggesting an unsettling shift in school culture.

Robinson recounted troubling comments made during professional development sessions, illustrating a broader narrative of shifting alliances and potential biases present in educational environments.

Both Jimenez and Ridgway, accused of promoting these contentious views within the district, refused to comment on the situation when approached.

While Governor Shapiro condemned the issues, others in governmental positions seem less eager to take responsibility. The spokesperson for Philadelphia Mayor Sherrell Parker clarified that this is primarily a matter for the Philadelphia School District to address, while the district’s superintendent declined to comment on ongoing investigations.
