Resignation of Top Aide Sparks Tensions
Mayor Eric Adams’ chief aide, Vice Mayor Randy Mastro, has resigned and voiced his criticism of incoming Mayor Zoran Mamdani. According to the Post, Mastro expressed discontent regarding Mamdani’s transition team, which recently added him—and others—to a list of 179 City Hall employees set to be replaced on January 1, 2026.
“There was no need for that,” Mastro wrote in a letter to Adams. “We are leaving city government together.” This statement underscores the apparent tension as Mastro had previously made it clear he would never support a “socialist” regime.
Mastro, at 69, previously served as deputy mayor under Rudy Giuliani and was appointed by Adams in March, during a period marked by significant turnover in the mayor’s office amid corruption scandals that have since subsided.
He has been openly critical of Mamdani’s social-democratic views and has particularly taken issue with his anti-Israel comments.
In his resignation letter, Mastro expressed gratitude to Adams for the opportunity to return to city government. He mentioned, “It is my understanding that I am the only person in the history of our city to have served as deputy mayor and acting mayor in two different administrations. This is an honor that I will soon share with my successor.” It’s a bit of a historical footnote, perhaps, but it underscores his belief in the value of seasoned leaders in city politics.
Mamdani announced last month that Freihandeen, 74, who held the position of chief of staff to former Mayor Bill de Blasio, would take over Mastro’s role starting in January. Mastro’s time under Adams lasted nine months.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mastro noted the “remarkable productivity,” citing record decreases in crime, high employment rates, and rapid affordable housing development. “It was a true team effort and one we can all be proud of,” he stated.
Adams echoed Mastro’s sentiments in a Sunday statement, expressing his appreciation: “After a distinguished career in and out of government, I am very pleased that Randy has accepted my call to return to City Hall. His experience, wisdom, and common sense will be invaluable.” He added a metaphor about “planes landing,” emphasizing Mastro’s contributions in recent months.
Representatives for Mamdani did not respond immediately to inquiries regarding Mastro’s resignation.
