Protests Erupt as Federal Agents Pursue Suspect near Chicago

Protesters targeted federal immigration agents with snowballs while the agents pursued a suspect following a car crash in the Chicago area.

Video footage captured multiple demonstrators shouting at undercover agents on a snowy street in Elgin, a suburb about 55 miles northwest of Chicago. In response, federal authorities resorted to deploying tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Onlookers began throwing snowballs at the agents during the chaotic scene. Eyewitness videos show the federal team warning the crowd before launching tear gas canisters into nearby yards. Protesters attempted to reduce the canisters’ impact by burying them in the snow.

The incident began on Saturday morning when federal agents sought help from local police after getting into a traffic accident while conducting an immigration enforcement operation.

According to Elgin police, the individual they were investigating fled the crash site and ran into a nearby residential area. Officers responded to a 911 call about a “masked subject” claiming to have a warrant and found federal law enforcement on-site, prompting them to clear the area.

Later, roughly two hours after the initial incident, police received about 30 more calls reporting potential shots fired. Upon their return, they found no evidence of gunfire; instead, it was confirmed that immigration officers had used “chemical irritants” to manage the crowd.

While assisting the local fire department, officers provided medical attention to seven individuals exposed to the tear gas, releasing them afterwards.

Reports on social media indicated that at least one arrest may have occurred; however, the Department of Homeland Security did not confirm this right away. The fate of the suspect being pursued remained unclear as well.

In a statement, the Elgin Police Department noted that they would continue responding to calls and assess actions within the limits of the Illinois Trust Act, which restricts cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

This confrontation follows months of heightened immigration enforcement activities by the Trump administration in the Chicago area as part of “Operation Midway Blitz.” Recently, ICE agents have also been deployed to cities like New Orleans and Minneapolis amid ongoing efforts to address illegal immigration.
