ICE’s Actions in Minnesota Spark Defense from Tom Homan

In Washington, Border Czar Tom Homan spoke out on Sunday in support of ICE’s enforcement actions in Minnesota. Local officials have claimed that as many as half of Somali immigrants in the area may possess fraudulent immigration documentation.

Homan emphasized that Minneapolis has a significant number of undocumented immigrants, insisting that citizens have “nothing to fear” as ICE intensifies operations in the state.

“There’s a large illegal Somali community there,” he noted during his appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “As American citizens, you know there’s nothing to fear.”

He also mentioned that because Minneapolis acts as a sanctuary city, ICE needs to dedicate additional resources to effectively identify individuals within the community.

The controversy surrounding Minnesota’s Somali population gained attention after President Trump criticized them last week, following a massive fraud scandal linked to $1 billion in aid, in which many Somali immigrants were implicated.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul area is home to the largest Somali community in the U.S. Recently, ICE revealed that it arrested over a dozen undocumented individuals during its recent operations.

This crackdown followed Trump’s public outrage amid the “Feeding Our Future” fraud scandal that has shaken the state.

Federal prosecutors state that many involved in the scheme created fake companies that claimed to provide social services but instead misappropriated taxpayer funds. Dozens have been indicted, particularly among the Somali community.

During a Cabinet meeting, Trump expressed his feelings bluntly, saying, “They’re not contributing anything. We don’t want them in our country.” He criticized the state of Somalia, suggesting, “There’s a reason why their country is not good.”

Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff for policy, indicated that law enforcement might have only begun to uncover the scale of the fraud, stating, “We believe that the Somalia fraud operation in Minnesota is the largest theft of taxpayer dollars through welfare fraud in the history of the United States.”

Miller added that forthcoming revelations would be shocking to Americans.

Homan addressed critics who minimize the issue of illegal immigration in Minnesota, asserting that his administration is focused on addressing “threats to public safety.” He confirmed that agents would detain and deport any illegal immigrants they come across.

However, the government’s aggressive stance on immigration has faced backlash, not only from the left but from various voices globally, including some Republicans who feel the tactics are too extreme.

CNN anchor Dana Bash highlighted an instance where an American was apprehended by immigration officials before it was discovered he had a valid driver’s license in his vehicle.

“I can’t tell you how many times illegal aliens have claimed to be American citizens. It happens all the time,” Homan remarked. “But it all comes back to reasonable suspicion.” He reassured that once investigations conclude and someone’s status as a U.S. citizen is verified, they will be released.
