Ilhan Omar Responds to Feeding Our Future Fraud Claims

Rep. Ilhan Omar, representing Minnesota, voiced her frustration on Sunday regarding the narrative surrounding a significant fraud scheme connected to the “Feeding Our Future” program, which involves individuals from the state’s Somali community. She emphasized that while some may have exploited the program, many others were victims, potentially benefiting from it as well.

In a discussion with Margaret Brennan, the host of “Face the Nation,” the extent of the fraud was described as shocking—cited as the largest fraud scheme related to COVID-19 in the U.S. Omar noted that it was the Justice Department, under President Biden, that specified many of the involved parties were Somali, which seemed to put additional focus on her community.

Brennan pressed Omar on why she thought the fraud took such a broad form. “As Minnesota taxpayers, we feel the impact,” Omar responded. “It’s frustrating that people overlook how this affects us as Minnesotans, how we could have utilized that money which was taken unfairly.”

Brennan further questioned if there had been a lapse in Minnesota’s Democratic leadership regarding this issue. Omar pointed out that she had reached out to the Attorney General to investigate how such a vast amount of money could vanish without anyone noticing. “These are questions we need to keep asking,” she said.

Recently, President Donald Trump and other officials have highlighted this and similar alleged fraudulent activities, accusing Minnesota’s Democratic Governor, Tim Walz, of mismanagement and incompetence.

The recent exchanges between Trump and Omar have been tense. Trump made derogatory comments regarding Somalis, suggesting they should go back to their homeland. In response, Omar and others condemned his remarks as bigoted, suggesting they served to distract from his own failures.

This scrutiny surrounds Minnesota as federal funds allocated to the Feeding Our Future initiative have come under investigation, with prosecutors labeling the situation as the largest fraud scheme stemming from the pandemic. Reports have emerged indicating that parts of Minnesota’s Somali community have seen significant fraudulent activity over the past few years, with individuals allegedly generating wealth by filing claims for neglected social services.

Omar mentioned that she was among the first lawmakers to speak out about this fraud, which she deemed “reprehensible.” She expressed her dismay about the misuse of funds that were meant to support children, asserting that everyone involved should face accountability.
