Chechen leader’s warnings about Ukraine reflect claims of a Zelenskyy assassination scheme

Chechen leader's warnings about Ukraine reflect claims of a Zelenskyy assassination scheme

Kadyrov’s Threats and the Ukrainian Response

Recent threats from Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov towards Ukraine seem to stem from a broader strategy linked to his plans from 2022 to invade Kiev and target President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, according to a former Ukrainian official.

This latest round of threats followed a reported drone strike by Ukrainian forces on a high-rise in Grozny, close to Kadyrov’s residence, on November 5. In reaction, Kadyrov’s associates declared in an online video that they would seek vengeance.

“It’s just another assassination threat aimed at Mr. Zelenskiy,” the former official explained. “The Chechens are quite serious about this.” Amidst the ongoing chaos, they noted a stark difference from earlier; in 2022, the atmosphere in Kiev was one of panic, but now it seems more resilient.

The strike hit a 28-story tower around 830 meters from Kadyrov’s home. The former official emphasized the shift in Zelenskiy’s position, stating that he now appears more secure and powerful compared to the early days of the conflict.

Kadyrov, known for his loyalty to the Kremlin, seemed to downplay the attack’s significance in a Telegram message but simultaneously warned of impending retaliation. He stated, “Starting tomorrow, Ukrainian fascists will experience a severe reaction.” Yet, he also claimed that they wouldn’t target civilians, distinguishing their actions from Ukrainian attacks on Chechen facilities.

Historically, Chechen forces have played a significant role, supporting Russian military objectives during the ongoing conflict, with some earlier attempts to reach high-ranking Ukrainian officials leading to intense efforts to protect those in government.

During the early stages of the 2022 invasion, strategies included sending Chechen fighters to eliminate crucial political figures in Ukraine. The concern back then was palpable, driving officials to seek additional security measures, particularly around sensitive locations like the metro station leading to the President’s bunker.

Yet, despite Kadyrov’s aggressive tone and the recent strike near his home, insights suggest that President Zelenskiy is displaying greater confidence and composure this time. As one former official pointed out, Zelenskiy feels empowered, unfazed by threats that once caused significant alarm.

In light of these developments, it remains to be seen how both sides will navigate this escalating tension. As always, the situation is complex and evolving.
