Vikings likely to bring in competition for J.J. McCarthy at quarterback in 2026

The Vikings seem to be reconsidering their options as JJ McCarthy has not been performing up to expectations.

Reports indicate that Minnesota is looking to bring in a veteran quarterback next offseason to compete with McCarthy for the starting position, as noted by NFL.com.

This decision appears to stem from increasing worries about McCarthy’s ongoing struggles and insufficient performance throughout 2025.

McCarthy was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft but missed the previous season due to a torn meniscus.

This year, he has played six games, attempting 159 passes but managing to complete only 86, resulting in a completion rate of 54.1%.

His statistics include 929 passing yards, six touchdowns, and a troubling ten interceptions.

He has only cleared the 200-yard mark in one of those six games.

His recent performances, coupled with two injury setbacks—a high ankle sprain and a concussion—seem to have sparked renewed discussions within the Minnesota organization about enhancing their quarterback options ahead of next season.

According to NFL Network, they are considering experienced free agent quarterbacks who could potentially elevate McCarthy’s performance and strengthen the roster.

It’s not necessarily the end of the road for McCarthy as a starter. Being just in his second year after being drafted in 2024 leaves him with two years left on his current contract, and there’s an option for a fifth year in 2028.

The Vikings, like many NFL teams, feel the pressure to make timely decisions regarding potential quarterback changes.

In a recent game against the Commanders, the Vikings secured a dominant 31-0 victory.

McCarthy did demonstrate some positive moments, completing 16 out of 23 passes for 163 yards and throwing three touchdowns.

Currently at a 5-8 record, the Vikings are desperately looking for ways to revitalize a season filled with uncertainty.
