On Sunday, a 31-year-old man was taken into custody following a robbery at Heathrow Airport in London. This incident resulted in 21 individuals, including a young child of three, being pepper-sprayed and needing medical attention, as reported by authorities.
The Metropolitan Police shared that the event took place in the airport’s parking lot early in the morning. A group of four men assaulted a woman in an elevator, stealing her suitcase and spraying her with what seemed to be pepper spray.
Commander Peter Stevens commented on the situation, stating, “A woman was robbed of her suitcase by four men who sprayed her with what appeared to be pepper spray.” He noted that others present in the elevator and nearby were also affected.
Witnesses described the suspects as three young males, all dressed in black and covering their heads. They reportedly fled the scene after the incident.
Video footage captured officers quickly responding to the situation, moving through a multi-storey car park with large firearms in hand.
Officials indicated that the victim and the suspect were familiar with one another, and they do not believe the incident is related to terrorism. Mr. Stevens further explained, “We think this incident involved individuals who knew each other, and that an altercation escalated, leading to injuries for several people.”
He reassured the public, saying, “We are not treating this incident as terrorism. We understand the public’s concerns and appreciate their cooperation today.”
The man in custody faces suspicion of assault, and law enforcement is on the lookout for the remaining suspects who managed to escape.
Paramedics responded on-site, treating injuries and transporting five individuals to the hospital. Fortunately, their injuries aren’t considered life-threatening.
The commotion caused delays for several hours in passenger movement to and from the airport, but it appears operations have since resumed normally, as noted by the airport’s social media update.
Authorities are still gathering information about the event and have reached out to the relevant agencies for further details.
