Is Marge Truman, the scene-stealer from 'IT: Welcome to Derry,' secretly the mother of Richie Tozier?

Recap of IT: Welcome to Delhi Episode 7

Episode 7 of IT: Welcome to Delhi delivers a heart-wrenching scene that’s meant to resonate emotionally with viewers. In an interesting twist, the character’s sacrifice and the reactions of those spared hint at deeper family connections between the children, echoing the Losers Club from Stephen King’s novel.

Could Marge Truman (Matilda Lawler) actually be the mother of Richie Tozier (Finn Wolfhard as a child and Bill Hader as an adult)? It’s a compelling question.

**Warning: Spoilers ahead for IT: Welcome to Delhi Episode 7, titled “The Black Spot,” now available on HBO Max.**

Since the announcement of IT: Welcome to Delhi, fans of Stephen King anticipated a direct link to Andy Muschietti’s films, particularly IT and IT: Chapter 2. This prequel series is set to showcase Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as Pennywise the Clown and will mainly unfold in Derry, 27 years prior to the events of the first movie.

We first meet Mike Hanlon (chosen by Jacobs as a child and Isaiah Mustafa as an adult), his father Will (Blake Cameron James), and his grandfather Leroy (Jovan Adepo), a courageous U.S. Airman. There’s a distressing scene involving the murder of a racist grandfather (Peter Outerbridge) related to bully Henry Bowers (Nicholas Hamilton) and the grim fate of innocent victims like Hank Grogan (Stephen Ryder). Surprisingly, the eerie Mrs. Kersh (Joan Gregson) also reveals more about her past! I have to say, I didn’t precisely connect the dots to the main storyline initially—Richie Tozier was the last to stand out to me.

In Episode 7, a racist mob, led by Clint Bowers, attacks the Black Spot to capture Hank Grogan. When Hank’s protector refuses to surrender him, the mob responds by locking the doors and setting the bar aflame. The consequences are lethal for nearly everyone inside. Interestingly, Stephen King’s narrative tells us that Will Hanlon and his friend Ronnie Grogan (Amanda Christine) are rescued by Dick Halloran (Chris Chalk), but sadly, he can’t save Rich Santos (Arian S. Cartaya) and Marge Truman.

Rich has a plan involving a refrigerator and invites Marge to join him inside, but soon realizes it only accommodates one person. Despite her protests, he calls her a knight, reminding her of the heroic tales they share, and, in a moment of vulnerability, confesses his love. Marge echoes those feelings back to him.

What makes this scene so striking is the suggestion that Marge could indeed grow up to be Richie Tozier’s mother. It’s logical that she’d want to honor her childhood hero by naming her son after him, and there are recurring hints throughout the season pointing to this connection.

For starters, both Marge and Richie share distinct traits. Sure, they both wear glasses, but Marge stands out for her humor and the way she captures attention in subtle ways—like in episode 2 where she performs comedic death scenes. Her quirky personality mirrors Richie’s “Trashmouth” charm.

But here’s the kicker: in King’s book, Richie’s mother is named “Maggie” Tozier. It’s fascinating to note that Marge is often a nickname for Margaret—so this could be an intentional shout-out.

Recently, executive producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti hinted that significant developments tied to the film are on the horizon. They noted that connections to the Losers Club characters will continue to emerge. Andy mentioned the importance of timing with Pennywise’s reappearances every 27 years, suggesting that lineage plays a huge role in the narrative.

In discussing themes of intergenerational trauma, Barbara mused that the storytelling naturally threads back to the past—before those themes were even named as such, adding a touch of humor to the serious undertone.

Taking Rich’s sacrifice, Marge’s comedic flair, and the hints from the Muschiettis into account, I’m inclined to believe that yes, Marge Truman is indeed Richie Tozier’s mom. This revelation suggests that at least three kids from the Losers Club share familial ties with the characters we’ve met in IT: Welcome to Delhi.
