- A 9-year-old girl from Michigan was diagnosed with a rare condition during her recovery from the flu.
- Her mother is alerting other parents about this unexpected and concerning complication.
- “This completely took me by surprise,” the mother remarked regarding her daughter’s diagnosis.
A Michigan mother initially thought her daughter was improving from the flu, but then Tori suddenly became unable to walk, which led to a rare diagnosis.
Ashley Geuther’s 9-year-old daughter, Tori, caught the flu and displayed typical symptoms like fever, chills, and fatigue. Ashley, 35, ensured that Tori got plenty of rest during this time.
Once Tori’s fever subsided, Ashley thought she’d turned a corner. However, Tori then began to suffer from severe pain in both legs, which took her mother by surprise.
The discomfort started in Tori’s thighs and soon moved down to her calves. Elizabeth assumed the leg pain was merely typical soreness from the flu.
However, the pain escalated, and Tori expressed that she felt too weak to stand, telling her mother, “my legs can’t support me.”
After taking Tori to a walk-in clinic, the doctors didn’t seem very concerned and suggested she rest and hydrate.
The next morning, Tori tried to get out of bed but fell to the floor because the pain was too intense when she put weight on her feet.
“That’s when I realized this was serious,” Ashley recalled.
Ashley brought Tori to the emergency room, where various tests were conducted, including blood tests and a urinalysis. Tori was ultimately diagnosed with benign acute childhood myositis (BACM), a rare condition characterized by localized muscle pain that often follows a viral upper respiratory infection.
The illness generally lasts only about a week, as noted by the NIH, which also mentioned that BACM is frequently misdiagnosed.
In Tori’s case, she made a full recovery and walked normally again after a week in the hospital, where she received IV fluids and pain relief.
Yet, Ashley expressed how shocked she was at the diagnosis.
“This completely caught me off guard; I had never even heard of such a complication from the flu. It was really frightening and unexpected,” she said.
Now, Ashley is trying to warn other parents about this rare complication. In a viral TikTok video, she showed Tori walking on her toes in the hospital while gripping a wheeled cart.
“As flu season approaches, please pay attention to your children and watch for potential complications,” she advised in her post.
Ashley shared more about what led to Tori’s diagnosis, emphasizing, “Fortunately, she recovered completely after a week, and I’m sharing this so that other parents can be aware of what to look for.”
Speaking further, Ashley urged parents, “Listen to your kids when they say something hurts, even if it sounds strange. Trust your instincts—you know your child best.”
